Creaking Floors and Whistling Windows – Ghost Busters or Home Fixers?

Strange noises in your home can be pretty unsettling, especially when you have no idea what is causing them. The good news is, despite what your kids are saying, it’s probably not a ghost that’s haunting you. The bad news? Something could be wrong in your home, and you might need to work out what it is so you can have it fixed.

We are going to take a look at four weird noises you might hear in your home and what they could mean.

1. Creaking floors and staircases

Creaking sounds are really common in homes, and more often than not, they are caused by natural movement in the structure of the home, with older homes more likely to be affected.

As wood expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, it can produce creaks when you walk across floors or use the stairs. While this is often harmless, excessive movement may indicate loose floorboards or supports that need tightening.

Simple maintenance can usually resolve the issue and reduce noise if it is bothering you.

2. Banging pipes

Banging pipes that make a noise when you turn your taps on or off are quite annoying, and can be a sign that all is not well with your plumbing. The most common cause of this is something known as water hammer, which is basically when your water flow is stopped or directed suddenly, creating pressure within the pipes. 

Over time, this level of pressure can really put a strain on your plumbing system, which is why it is often a good idea to install pipe supports or pressure regulators, which will not only protect your pipes, but also reduce the noise. 

If the problem continues after doing this, it is worth having a professional inspect your plumbing system.

3. Gurgling drains

If you have noticed gurgling noises coming from your sinks, toilets, or drains, then there is a good chance you have a blockage somewhere in the system or that air has been trapped in your plumbing system. If the problem continues, it is worth having a professional inspect your plumbing system.

This is really not something you should ignore because it could indicate a blockage or ventilation issue in your drainage system. In some cases, professional drain repair may be required to clear obstructions and restore proper flow, and it’s important to note that addressing the problem early can help prevent more serious issues such as backups or leaks.

4. Whistling windows or doors

If you hear whistling coming from the areas near your windows or doors, then that is a pretty good indicator that you have a gap or draft coming from them. Air passing through small openings can create a noticeable noise, especially on windy days, and it is not good news for your home’s energy efficiency.

So, take some time to check seals, weather stipping and frames to see if you can find out where the draft is coming in. Replacing worn seals or filling gaps can eliminate the noise and improve energy efficiency at the same time, and it’s pretty easy to do. 

Now you know what that annoying noise is, it’s time to do something about it and restore peace to your place. After that, it’s just a matter of explaining to the kids that the ghost has gone… at least until the next creaking sound.
