Manchester High is a School of Firsts

As the first academic girls’ school in the North, with many historic firsts achieved by its alumnae, Manchester High School for Girls is a proudly single-sex, 152-year-old school that fosters a love of education, lifelong learning and academic excellence.

The school places strong emphasis on holistic development, encouraging mindfulness, fun and happiness as essential ingredients for success. Guided by its core values of Compassion, Individuality, Innovation, Learning and Wellbeing, MHSG creates a nurturing and inclusive environment in which every pupil can thrive.

Its results speak for themselves. The Class of 2025 achieved an outstanding 86% A*–B at A-level, while the GCSE cohort secured an impressive 78% Grades 9–7 (A*–A) in their 2025 examinations.

Furthermore, the 2024 ISI Inspection Report identified a ‘Significant Strength’.

Inspectors noted: “Leaders have high aspirations and have firmly established core values that underpin the school. This results in a caring, inclusive and diverse community. Staff are ambitious for the pupils and thread the values of learning, innovation, compassion, wellbeing and individuality through every aspect of school life. This results in empowered and dynamic pupils who flourish.”

Beyond the classroom, MHSG celebrates multi-faith festivals and cultural histories, while raising substantial funds for charity, including its own Bursary Fund.

With a proud history of educating remarkable women — including all three daughters of the famous suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst — the school continues to inspire fearless pioneers.

As its curriculum evolves to include innovative subjects, and with exceptional academic outcomes and strong alumnae connections, MHSG remains committed to empowering girls to excel for the next 150 years and beyond.
