Altrincham Preparatory School: Celebrating 90 Years of Inspiring Boys

Ninety years ago, a remarkable vision took shape in a single room of a Scout hut in Altrincham. Today, that vision continues to flourish at Altrincham Preparatory School, where generations of boys have been inspired to achieve, to lead and to thrive. Nick Vernon, Headmaster of APS, looks at the school’s journey, from its humble beginnings to the vibrant community it is today.

Founded in 1936 by a group of visionary educators, including the grandfather of current Chairman Andrew Hill, APS was established with a simple but powerful ambition: to provide an exceptional education for boys in Bowdon, Altrincham and Hale. From those humble beginnings, the school has grown into one of the region’s most respected independent schools, recognised for academic excellence, outstanding pastoral care and an unrivalled understanding of how boys learn best.

As Andrew Hill reflects, “I am most proud of the sense of belonging, that natural inner confidence of being an ‘APS Boy’ that still shines through today.” It is this enduring spirit, together with the founders’ values, that has shaped thousands of boys over the past nine decades.

At APS, boys’ education isn’t simply what we do. It’s who we are.

Altrincham Preparatory School for Boys

With 90 years of experience, we understand what motivates boys, how they learn and how they flourish. For nine decades, we have inspired boys to become confident, kind and ambitious young men. We have guided pupils into some of the country’s most prestigious secondary schools, including Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, The Manchester Grammar School and many other leading independent and selective schools. We have spent 90 years developing boys through sport, nurturing resilience, teamwork and leadership, and 90 years providing exceptional pastoral care that supports every boy as an individual.

Today, APS continues to lead the way in boys’ education. Small class sizes, specialist teaching, outstanding facilities and a rich co-curricular programme ensure every boy is known, challenged and encouraged to achieve his full potential.

As we celebrate this significant milestone, we honour not only our founders, but every member of the APS community past and present who has helped shape our remarkable story. Together, they have built a school where boys develop confidence, character and a lifelong love of learning.

The next chapter begins now.
