MHSG: A School of Firsts.
The first academic girls’ school in the North, with historical firsts achieved by its alumnae, Manchester High is a proudly single-sex, 152-year-old school fostering a love for education, lifelong learning, and academic excellence. But as Mrs Helen F Jeys, Head Mistress of Manchester High School for Girls, explains, the school’s approach is about much more than academic achievement.
We opened our new Pre-School for the first time in September 2026 and are thrilled to offering a Manchester High education to some of Manchester’s youngest girls.
We emphasise holistic development; encouraging mindfulness, fun, and happiness as key to success. Guided by our values of Compassion, Individuality, Innovation, Learning, and Wellbeing, we create a nurturing and inclusive environment.
Our results speak for themselves. Manchester High Class of 2025 achieved 86% A*-B in their A-levels and our GCSE cohort achieved 78% Grades 9-7 (A*-A)– placing us in the Sunday Times’ top five North West Independent Schools.
We are Education Choices Magazine’s 2026 Senior Winner for Incorporating Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Belonging into the Curriculum. The Independent School Awards Commended us in their same category, and in their latest review, The Good Schools Guide called our Preparatory School “one of the happiest and most effervescent schools we have visited.”
Our latest ISI Inspection Report highlighted a ‘Significant Strength’. Inspectors noted: “Staff are ambitious for the pupils and thread the values through every aspect of school life. This results in empowered and dynamic pupils who flourish.”
With a proud history of educating remarkable women, including all three of Emmeline Pankhurst’s daughters, we continue to inspire fearless pioneers. Our curriculum evolves with innovative subjects and outstanding academic results and strong alumnae ties, MHSG remains committed to empowering girls to excel for the next 150 years and beyond.
