There is no need for children to wait until they are teenagers to start learning about money. Research from the Money and Pensions Service suggests that children’s money habits can begin forming before the age of seven, making the early years a useful time for parents to introduce simple ideas about saving, spending and planning ahead.
As well as the activities taking place in branches, children can explore these ideas at home with Vernon Bear’s Book of Money, a free 24-page activity book featuring games and puzzles about topics including saving, budgeting, needs versus wants, borrowing and recognising scams. Children opening a junior savings account with Vernon can also receive a free piggy bank, but the activity book provides plenty of ideas and an easy ways for parents for starting conversations about money at home too.
Whether it’s deciding between something they want now and something they could save for, understanding the difference between needs and wants, or simply putting coins into a piggy bank, small everyday activities can help children begin to develop confidence around money.
So, if you’re looking for a free activity during the summer holidays, the money-themed sessions offer a chance for children to have some fun while picking up a few useful skills along the way.
