The King’s School: A New Chapter in 525 Years of History

The King’s School in Macclesfield has appointed Dr Vivienne Horsfield as its next Head of Foundation. She will join King’s from Westminster School, one of the world’s leading independent schools, where she is currently a Deputy Head, and will take up her post in September 2027, succeeding Jason Slack.

Dr Vivienne Horsfield | HeadshotDr Horsfield has nearly 30 years’ experience in independent education, including senior leadership roles at Westminster School and The Manchester Grammar School. She also has extensive governance experience, having served as a chair of governors, trustee of a multi-academy trust and a trustee of several charities.

She holds a Doctorate in Education and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. During her career, she has led organisational change and developed high-performing teams, with a particular focus on providing opportunities for young people.

Her appointment comes as King’s prepares to celebrate its 525th anniversary and follows six years of leadership by Jason Slack.

Incoming Chair of Governors Jonathan Watkins said: “We are thrilled to welcome Dr Horsfield to King’s. Throughout the appointment process, Vivienne impressed us with her warmth, integrity and intellectual depth, as well as her clear strategic vision for the future of the school.

“She brings experience from some of the country’s most respected schools, together with a strong understanding of the North West. We are confident she will build on the work of Jason and his team as King’s enters the next phase of its history.”

Dr Horsfield said: “I am honoured and excited to have been appointed as the next Head of Foundation at King’s. King’s is a remarkable school with a proud heritage, a thriving community and a clear sense of purpose.

“As someone with strong roots in the North West, this feels both a professional privilege and a personal homecoming. I look forward to working with pupils, parents, staff and governors to build on the school’s many strengths and shape an ambitious future for King’s.”
