Building with GeoMag, a Construction Toy for the Whole Family

Construction toys have been a favourite of our nearly 9 year old for several years. He loves to follow through a set of instructions with a new set, then go off-piste with time and create his own models. His younger sister has recently become more engaged in Lego too. So, when we were asked to review a box of GeoMag Supercolour Panels, I was interested to see what they thought of a different type of construction toy.

The packaging grabbed the attention of them both and they swiftly had all the pieces laid out ready to start getting creative. The set has 52 pieces in total, which meant they very much had to work together as there are not enough pieces for individual model builds with this size of set. It contained the rods, balls and brightly coloured plastic shapes. The information leaflet is helpfully full of ideas of ways to use the pieces, and they get stuck in with the variety of model suggestions. They soon worked out the polarity of the rods and what was needed to get building.

Classic Geomag Supercolour Panels, 52 piece magnetic constriction setOverall, they persevered when something was not quite right and worked well together for a long time. I saw more perseverance when my daughter played alone later. She took interest in the guide to making shapes and solids she had learned already in school. It was good to see her challenged.

The pieces all seem sturdy, easy to handle and the rainbow colours do make the finished article look more interesting. The completed builds are quite sturdy too and after a while they were integrating them with other toys. It is great that GeoMag includes a storage container for the rods and balls, the larger parts fitting in the plastic storage bag.

I like that the toy bridged the age gap well (2 years) in addition to appealing to both genders – they were both equally interested. My daughter has really enjoyed playing with GeoMag and has asked for a second set so she can go on to build the larger modular structures. The age range on the box is listed as 5-99 and I can see that if you had more pieces, it would be an enjoyable and creative family activity.

I really like these. My niece sometimes has difficulties combining and separating Lego/Duplo pieces. So this magnetic system really has an advantage.

I bought a magnetic construction set from a jumble sale for 10p about 15 years ago. Money so well spent giving all my grandchildren countless hours of fun. They have all been fascinated by magnetism.

This is a really nice alternative to LEGO and would be something my two nieces would absolutely love. Always particularly nice to see construction sets that really aren’t mainly geared up to boys. I also like the way a child can make the shapes they are learning about at school.
