New Headmaster joined Stockport Grammar Junior School

Stockport Grammar Junior School’s new Headmaster Matthew Copping was first inspired to become a teacher when he volunteered at a local primary school at the age of 16. Seeing children understand a new concept or master a new skill sparked a lifelong enthusiasm that has led to a career of almost 30 years dedicated to children’s academic and personal development.

Mr Copping joined SGJS at the start of the school year following the retirement of Mr Tim Wheeler MBE. Prior to being appointed to the role, Mr Copping was Headmaster of Brooklands Primary School in Sale. With SGJS’s new Pre-Reception building for nursery age children almost complete, he has joined SGJS at an exciting time.

Having originally studied at Anglia Ruskin University for a Bachelor of Education degree, specialising in Mathematics and Art, he has continued to grow his professional expertise. Adding to his portfolio of achievements, Mr Copping attained the National Professional Qualification for Headship, is an accredited School Improvement Partner and most recently completed the National Professional Qualification in Executive Leadership.

Mr Copping says: “I am keen to build on the strengths of the school ensuring that we provide a broad and enriching curriculum as well as a high quality co-curricular programme. It will be fantastic to see our Early Years offering continue to develop as we make the very most of our new Pre-Reception building and further develop outdoor learning.

SGS achieved the highest ISI inspection rating of ‘Excellent’ in 2019. A unique combination of specialist teaching, exceptional facilities, small class sizes and strong connections with the Senior School, creates a nurturing and happy environment in which children can excel.

In his spare time he is a keen runner, completing half marathons each year and enjoys activities such as fishing or paddle boarding with his family. This passion for the outdoors and sport means that he is looking forward to seeing the children at SGJS become fully immersed in the school’s friendly community and fantastic range of co-curricular activities.
