Stockport Grammar Pupils Enjoy STEM Success

Stockport Grammar School pupils are building an impressive record of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) successes from securing awards for airplane designs to excelling in the UK Mathematics Trust’s Senior Mathematical Challenge.

To support their classroom work pupils have been attending lectures by experts including Professor Brian Cox, who gave a sneak preview of the lecture that he has prepared to tour nationally early next year.

Scientific pupils also attended two fascinating medical lectures, including one led by doctors and clinical physiologists from Manchester Royal Infirmary (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust), on the topic of touch sensitivity and pain not being something that can be ‘clinically’ diagnosed.

Meanwhile, 49 keen young mathematicians from the school were awarded certificates in the UK Mathematics Trust’s Senior Mathematical Challenge. Naomi Littlewood, Nick Dow, Alex Hewetson, Lauryn Howard, Max Howe, Nikita Murray and Alex Pollard were awarded gold, 17 others gained silver and 25 secured bronze certificates.

In October Upper Sixth pupils Nick Dow, Alex Hewetson, Max Howe and Alex Pollard came second in the highly competitive Liverpool University Physics Olympics after winning one challenge against 25 other teams.

Finally, aspiring aerospace engineer and current Fifth Year pupil Matthew Byle picked up two impressive awards during a STEM course at RAF College Cranwell in Lincolnshire.

The intense course involved 10 hours of written work and 15 hours of project work, which saw Matthew create a design for planes and test how they would work. His dedication paid off as he was awarded both the Indust rial Cadet Silver Award and the CREST Engineering Silver Award.
