Girl Power

It’s that time of year again for us parents, the children go back to school, and normal services resume! For all families, September feels like a new start, often more so than the new year – so what better time to clear out their bedrooms and redecorate. As our children grow their needs change, and their bedrooms become places in which they entertain friends, have sleepovers, do homework, house cherished toys and, of course, occasionally sulk!

To give you a head start, and continuing with our design board theme, I have created a design board for a girl’s bedroom:

The scheme
The design is both feminine and modern and will carry them through the teenage years and beyond (gulp!). The walls are painted in a contemporary grey with blue undertones (www.farrow-ball.com, Lamp Room Gray). I have also included a feature wall using Sanderson’s Finch wallpaper. The lovely citrus colours contrast well with the grey and the pattern is very intricate. For the windows I’d recommend a plain citrus woven fabric (scion plains two – Citronella) as either a roman blind or curtain. This can have a grey border to add some detail. Both Sanderson’s Finch wallpaper and fabric can be found at www.stylelibrary.com.

Furniture and lighting
The multifunctional day bed can act as a sofa during the day and bed at night, it can be bought with a separate underbed that pulls out for when friends sleep over. It’s finished in crisp white to keep the look fresh and can be bought from www.time4sleep.co.uk. The bright yellow side table from Habitat is both stylish and fun, and the colour helps pull the scheme together. I have included a ladder desk from www.futoncompany.co.uk which is great if space is an issue and provides both a desk and shelves so is ideal for homework. For the lighting I have kept to fresh white with a simple overhead pendant and a wall light that can be mounted above the bed and directed as needed, both are from www.made.com.

The room can be accessorised with bright cushions (keep to yellow, blue and grey to tie with the scheme) and fun pictures.
