Give the Gift of Dance this Valentine’s

What could be more romantic than dancing Valentine’s night away together with your significant other? Unfortunately, as most people reading this will know it’s not so easy to go out dancing when you’ve got children in the equation.

But just because you might not be able to go out dancing doesn’t mean you can’t have a ball in your own living room. The Just Dance franchise from Ubisoft has been turning millions of living rooms into discotheques for the best part of 14 years now, through several generations of consoles.

Now that 2023 is in full swing it might be the time to gift your other half the 2023 edition that is a first in many ways. The first edition not to be available on PS4, or Xbox One (you’ll need a PS5, Nintendo Switch or Xbox Series console to play from now on) it’s also the first version not to be available as a physical disc or cartridge, meaning your only physical option is to buy a code in a box. If you’re buying it for Valentine’s this is probably preferable to downloading from the eshop.

Anyone who’s played a previous version of Just Dance will be familiar with the mechanics. Previous versions have gone through a wide range of ways to track your movements as you follow the characters on the screen.

The 2023 version understands that almost everyone these days owns a smart phone and that this is the obvious way to allow as many players dance at the same time as possible.

We were playing on a Nintendo Switch, which also allows the option of using the joy cons with the safety straps. For anyone that hasn’t played before, you basically mirror the characters on screen and copy the dance moves (or try to copy them in my case) to earn points and stars as the song progresses. It’s an extremely simple format in many ways, yet incredibly addictive and guaranteed to entertain not just mum and dad but the whole family.

Just Dance avatar 2023Kids will also love the customisable avatars, tags, collectables etc. but as a grown man I’ve never really understood the appeal of these. If you’re into that kind of thing though, you won’t be disappointed. There’s also the option of online play if you fancy taking on friends or family from afar, along with a variety of modes for those of you with a competitive streak in you

Song wise, Just Dance 2023 does what it always does and delivers a decent core of 40 songs and dances upfront while providing access to hundreds more via their subscription service check out the full track listing right here, where you’re bound to find one or two that you can slow dance to once the kids are tucked up in bed. The visuals are great and the choreography is top notch, as always from the Just Dance series.

This year’s offering feels more relaxed on the menu screens too, the calming blue of the screen and laid back menu music is far more in tune with a romantic night in than some of the previous offerings.
