Animals Real and Imaginary: from Chester Zoo to Dragon Days

Wilmslow Preparatory School kids took part in all sorts of fun activities last half term, both in and out of the classroom. These ranged from building dens, to taking off on a zoo adventure, to performing in the school show and music festival.

Despite the unseasonably wet weather we had for most of spring, the school’s Prep 5 and 6 children enjoyed their fantastic visit to Chester Zoo. During the trip, the children went on a virtual expedition into the depths of the mysterious Amazon and other rainforests, investigating the incredible biodiversity and importance of this habitat through hands-on activities. They also looked at the Zoo’s conservation work and, importantly, what can be done to save the rainforests. Bradley Lavagna-Slate, WPS Headteacher, commented: “The pupils had a great day at Chester Zoo, a place that we are so fortunate to have right on our doorstep.

Dragon Days at Wilmslow Prep SchoolBack indoors, Prep 3 and 4 children worked very hard to perform brilliantly in their show, Dragon Days, especially as the majority of the rehearsals took place on Zoom! It was truly wonderful for the school to see a production on stage again, and to hear the applause of a live audience (as other bubbles watched from a suitable distance); a really uplifting milestone moment after the last 12+ months.

The children were outstanding, bringing to life the eccentric characters who, in the story, have a tendency towards exaggeration and a flair for the dramatic, and who come together in the end to convey the importance of friendship, kindness and not judging a book (dragon) by its cover. As one the songs went: ‘put on the shoes of another, don’t worry how you appear, look for the goodness in everyone, even when dragons are near’. An important message for everyone to remember!

Mr Lavagna-Slate said: “A huge thank you to all pupils and staff involved in delivering this exceptional performance, in production or in support; and to our wonderful WPS families. A massive thank you for all your help with learning lines, practising songs and providing costumes. It really is very much appreciated; we hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed creating it!” The WPS Head also added: “Our academically comprehensive curriculum is enhanced by an excellent range of enrichment activities, including a wide selection of extra-curricular clubs and activities, day and residential trips, visits and community work. Our outstanding education ensures that learning thrives and flourishes both in and out of the classroom.
