Gift Guide: Snap it up in time for Christmas

Reader’s Review By Paul Wojnicki

Any parent with young children will tell you that kids love slap bands. My two (now aged nine and six) are no different, and over the years they’ve built up an impressive collection. But while I’ve been content to indulge their obsession with them, I never really got the point in slap bands. They just didn’t seem to have any practical purpose.

And then I came across the Snap Watch.

What the makers of the Snap Watch have – very cleverly – done is incorporate a digital watch into what looks and feels like a cool looking slap band. The bands come in six different styles, all of which appealed to our six-year-old daughter Ella – who wanted them all!

Once we’d reasoned with her and explained she was only having one, we had to go through a complicated process of elimination. Was it going to be the purple unicorn design, or the blue shark one? But then the black astronaut design and the dragon design were just too cool to miss out on too.

Girl with SnapWatch in the bathroomEventually she opted for the dragon design, and since it arrived last week, she hasn’t taken it off except for sleeping, baths and washing her hands. The Snap Watch is splash proof, so washing her hands should be fine, but she’s taking no chances as she loves it so much. She delights in me asking her the time, which I do at least once every hour. The funny thing is that she’ll even use the Snap Watch to tell me the time when she’s watching her tablet – which has the time in the top corner.

Since Ella is in Year Two now and will be working on telling the time with an analogue clock, we’ve also started to use the Snap Watch as an education tool. I tend to ask her what time it is at half past the hour, quarter-past or quarter-to. This way she’s able to see how this relates to the digital time on the Snap Watch. The watch can quickly be changed from 12-hour clock to 24-hour clock too, so I plan to work on this with her in the next few weeks.

At £14.99 the Snap Watch is a really affordable first watch for a child of Ella’s age, and would probably make a great stocking filler for any child of primary school age. It’s not a smart watch and pretty much just tells you the time and date, but the beauty of this is that it isn’t a distraction like smart watches can be and so I’m happy to send her to school with it on.

The only problem we have now is that other parents have started asking us “where did you get Ella’s watch?” I know what that means, half the class will be wearing them in a few weeks and once Ella sees her friends in that purple unicorn design she’s going to want to add to her collection!

Our rating 10/10. Worth every penny of the £14.99 price tag, but even better now, with a pre-Christmas offer of £9.99. The perfect stocking filler for any child of primary school age. The designs are eye catching, the concept is clever and there aren’t any of the bells and whistles of smart watches that can easily distract kids.
