Christmas Board Games from Cheatwell

Just in time for Christmas M&D Magazine received a review about board games fit for the season and good for all the family. Read on to find out what Peter Matthews, our reader and a regular reviewer, has to say,

Christmas board gamesI cannot believe it has taken this long! The best things about Christmas are where tradition, family, the potential for drunken fun all meet and blend into one steaming bowl of yuletide punch – like Christmas jumpers, selection boxes and eating your Weetos with Baileys instead of milk on Christmas morning. Board games are such an obvious choice and have been a rainy-day Christmas holiday staple for years – Monopoly, scrabble (and now Dobble in this house) – but no one to my knowledge has successfully ‘Christmassed’ boardgames up until Cheatwell created this new set of 8 games in 1 to bring out everyone’s competitive spirit!

All 8 games are packaged in a neat box, which means they are great for transporting around to different homes as you do your visits over the season. And if Christmas isn’t for you, there’s a different game for every night of Chanukah, or a new game for every fourth iftar of Ramadan.

1. Christmas Charades…a Christmas classic
2. Santa’s Sack
3. Christmas Lists
4. Santa Says: Create a story using just three words
5. Bah! Humm Bug… a Christmas song game
6. Under The Tree
7. Silent Night… describe something without saying the forbidden words
8. Christmas Trivia: definitely a favourite in our house!

child playing a board gameTo give it the ‘full family’ test – we played them all with our fast-learning 4 year old and her grandparents, who definitely had loads of fun with Charades and Under the Tree. To get most out of the games, you’ll probably need children ages 6+, just so they can get a decent grip of the rules (though our 1 year old did have a hoot tipping each and every card out of its packet and putting them back again). But for my husband the real fun came when he took the box around to his friends for Christmas drinks.

Also available from Cheatwell this year is another fun family pleaser – the Christmas Express board game. It is a classic style board game using cards to move up the board in a race to get to the North Pole, but you have to avoid certain points like the Reindeer Crossings and Snow storms, as well as other players who hamper your progress! We liked the Hot Chocolate Station. My daughter’s favourite Christmas film and book is the Polar Express, so she warmed to this one immediately. We loved the look and feel of the game which, was really sturdy, colourful, festive and kept my little girl entertained for ages, encouraging lots of interaction and quality family time (and a break from screen time). I can see us playing this one for years to come, Polar Express on the telly in the background and hot chocolates for everybody.

So if you’re looking for some new additions to your board game cupboard and fun over the festive season, we recommend checking out what Cheatwell has to offer and getting them on your letter to Father Christmas pronto!

For me playing any board game with the family has been one of the best parts of Christmas for me for over 70 years. The players may have changed over the years but I’m as competitive as ever!

Sounds good. I am always looking for things to keep my son entertained at Christmas besides the TV so may invest in this. Thanks for the pointers.

Personally never been a fan of ‘bored’ games, never liked them as a child either, demand too much attention for me. Saying that, the rest of my clan love them, so we have agreed to get something to play this year on Christmas night, so some food for thought here, thanks for the ideas.
