Cheadle Hulme School Teacher, Charity Organiser and Junior School Librarian, Mrs Kate Sargent now proudly bears the new title of Published Author.

Mrs Sargent’s debut novel Escape from Versailles, which follows the lives of two young people during the turbulent years of the French Revolution, is now available to buy and is already gaining five-star reviews. Dubbed as ‘historical fiction for all ages’, the book brings together Mrs Sargent’s passion for History, books and learning.

CHS Junior pupils were captivated as Mrs Sargent read extracts of her novel at the official launch of the book earlier in the year. Using props and videos, Mrs Sargent explained how she had gained inspiration for the book from trips she had been on to France with Junior School pupils and explained how the plot was constructed, using an historical timeline.

Mrs Sargent said: “I decided to write the book three years ago, for a new challenge. I really enjoyed carrying out the research for the book, especially travelling to Paris to check out the venues and I found writing it really rewarding, as the plot and characters developed.”

Escape from Versailles is primarily aimed at children in Years 5 to 8, an age-group which Mrs Sargent knows well: “As well as being a class teacher in the Junior School, I also take some History classes in the Senior School at CHS. Knowing the age-range so well really helped when writing the book, as I was able to draw on my teaching experience in the classroom.”

The book is available to buy via Amazon and local bookshops and Mrs Sargent has been encouraged by the positive response from pupils at the leading independent School. “If enough people like it,” she said, “I might even be tempted write another!”
