SciTech Reboot

SciTech was founded in 1991 by Philip and Amy Rose. The aim was to “amaze children with amazing science”. Ever since, SciTech has been creating a perfect blend by introducing amazing children to amazing high-tech equipment such as ultrasound scanners, surgical microscopes, thermal imaging cameras and even a Mercedes Formula One racing car! The focus of SciTech has always been hands-on science and technology.

Now, after a three-year pause, SciTech is resuming its adventure, under new management but with the same approach: “to understand science you have to do it!”

After over 30 years of running SciTech, Philip is ready to step back (slightly) and hand the day-to-day running of SciTech over to Tony McGuinness. Tony joined SciTech in 2002 and has been a Team Leader ever since. With over 40 years’ experience in teaching, training and instructing, Tony has devised many of the SciTech days over the last 20 years including Space Fire & Ice and Escape & Camouflage. Philip will still be joining SciTech Summer and Easter Schools and bringing his own unique passion and experience to the science education of children.

This Easter, they’re holding a three-day holiday camp from 12th until 14th April at Baguley Hall Primary School. SciTech will be running 3 workshops:

Escape – discover the best way to get out of a burning building, how animals camouflage themselves and other tricks they use to escape being eaten.
Below: Lily with camouflage – too much, too little, just right.

Forces – discover how levers, ropes and pulleys can give you super strength, speed things up and slow them down – then ride the Trolley of Doom!!

Illusion – find out how magic shows use science, not magic, how they work, how to build them and be part of illusions.

Explaining this year’s arrangements for the youngest children, Tony says: “Our 5-6 year olds follow their own special program, mirroring what the older children are doing but with more staff and with experiments adapted to tiny fingers! We are delighted to report that our Mini Team Leader is Pat, who has over 20 years’ experience of working with children, has been taken out of storage and can’t wait to resume SciTech.

The summer programme 2023 is still being finalised, but Tony believes that many of the previous experiments will make their return and will all feature over the next few years.

Space Day – controlling robots on “Mars”, launching Stomp Rockets, modelling the formation of the Solar System.

Bubbles – find out what a bubble looks like, from the inside.

Chocolate – this probably does not need much selling but just in case: learn how chocolate is prepared then ensure it “melts in your mouth, not in your hand”.

Technology workshop – includes some of SciTech’s favourite experiments: ‘the custard bath’ gives children a chance to experience the wonder of running on a non-Newtonian fluid; and the ice-cream workshop which teaches them how to make ice-cream with liquid nitrogen.
